Roof Rats (rattus rattus)
Roof rats get their name from their tendency to be found in the upper parts of buildings. Ranging in size from 6 to 8 inches in length, not including their tails, they have very poor vision and are color blind. They do have extremely strong senses of hearing, smell, touch and taste.
Habitat
Roof rats can be found in the upper parts of buildings, and can also be found under, in and around structures. They only need a space of one-half inch to get into buildings.
Infestation Signs
If you see burrows near your building, large droppings (5/8 – 3/4 inch) or a rat itself, you could have an infestation. Other signs include bite marks on items or stored food, greasy body marks along the floor or between tight spaces, or small rodent footprints. Norway rats are typically active at night, but may seen during the day.
Reproduction
If you suspect an infestation, it is imperative to get quality rodent control services as soon as possible. Rats do not hibernate and breed year-round. Pregnancies last only three weeks, and female rats can produce up to 12 litters per year. The lifespan of a Norway Rat is typically one to two years.
Control / Prevention
To prevent rats from entering a home, seal up any holes or cracks larger than a quarter. Remove sources of moisture and harborage. You will want to limit what they seek most: food, water, and shelter. To do this, make sure food and garbage containers have lids and are well sealed, fix water leaks, and eliminate trash and standing water in your yard and surrounding building area. Keep doors, windows, and vents closed, screened, or covered.
